Spread over 120 sq km, The Tadoba National Park is the oldest national
park in Maharashtra and comes under the Project Tiger umbrella. Located 100 km south
of Nagpur and 45 km north of Chandrapur named after Tadoba, a courageous village
chief who died while valiantly fighting off a tiger.
Thickly forested hills form the north and western boundaries. More than thousand
species of birds, animals, insects and other life forms inhabit here. Large herds
of Chitals, Sambars, Barking Deer, Chausingha and Nilgai, Sloth Bear, Wild Dog,
Wild Boar and Leopard who are inhabitants of this beautiful wildlife sanctuary.
Ornithologists will get to see as many as 181 species of birds, including water
birds. The majestic tiger enamours the tourists.
Civets and Squirrels also dwell as also it is home of the marsh crocodile. Night
falls the jungle air comes alive with and attracts many water birds like Cattle
Egrets, Purple Moorhens and Jacanas. Observation towers and 'machaans' help viewing
the flora and fauna.
The Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, often referred to as ‘The Jewel
of Vidarbha’, is located in the Chandrapur District. Established in 1995, this reserve
is the second tiger reserve.
Tadoba Lake is located in middle of the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve.
Around 200 species of birds are found near the lake, including the Indian Pitta,
Oriental Honey and White-Eyed Buzzard, Paradise Flycatcher, Orange-Headed ground
Thrush and Indian Roller. Some of the other commonly spotted birds are the changeable
Hawk Eagle, Black-Hooded Oriole, Monarch Flycatcher, Grey-Hornbill and Golden-Oriole.
The Erai Dam, situated across River Erai, is a gravity and earth
fill dam. The length of this dam is about 1,620 m and its height is around 30 m
above the lowest foundation. Its gross storage capacity and volume content are 226,500
cu km and 985 cu km, respectively.
